Norbert Baer, 97 years old, formerly of Columbia Street, Amsterdam, passed away on_Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. He had been a resident of the Hillcrest Springs Adult Home. He was born November 1, 1909 in Karlsruhe, Germany son of the late Julius and Cilly Schwarzwalder Baer.

Norbert moved to Palestine in 1936 settling in Haifa. He served with the British army for five years during the WWII era. He was awarded the African and Italian and European Star medals. After returning to Haifa from the war, he fought in the War of Liberation. He married the former Blanka Reutlinger on January 23, 1951. She predeceased him in 1998.

In 1957, Norbert moved to the United States, settling in Fort Plain, NY. He was employed by the Fort Plain Packing Company until his retirement in 1984. After retiring, Norbert moved to Amsterdam where he had since resided. He was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel Synagogue and the Jewish War Veterans.

Norbert is survived by his cousins Lore Koppel and her husband Leo of Fort Plain, and Gad Nadel of Israel.

Funeral Services are today at 12 noon at Congregation Sons Of Israel, 355 Guy Park Avenue. Rabbi Morris Zimbalist officiating.
