Martin Sanger HARRISBURG Martin Sanger, 93, who had been a resident of York for many years and of Pompano Beach, Fla. since 1973, died Sunday morning, May 30, 2004 at the Residence of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Born in Oberdorf nach Bopfingen, Germany on July 25, 1910, he was the son of the late Natan and Lina K. Sanger. At the age of 15-1/2 he left home to work as an apprentice in the metal industry, supporting himself and sending money home to support his family. He came to America in 1934 at the age of 24. Mr. Sanger started as a laborer at a metal company in New Jersey and worked his way up to General Manager and Executive Vice President in 2 years. At that time, he met his loving wife. Over the next few years he sponsored more than 50 people, including family and friends, facilitating their escape from Nazi Germany. In 1946 Mr. Sanger and two partners founded Colonial Metals Company in Columbia, Pa. From its inception until his retirement in 1979 he served as President and CEO. His family and his business were his passions. From 1967 to 1971 Mr. Sanger served as President of the Association of Brass and Bronze Ingot Manufacturers. He was a member of and served on the board of Temple Beth Israel. He was a member of the Jewish Community Center and the Outdoor Country Club of York and the Blue Ridge County Club of Harrisburg. Surviving is his wife, Esther R. Sanger, to whom he was married for 62 years. Also surviving are the following children: Gail Sanger Raphael of Pittsburgh, Richard J. Sanger of York and Janice Sanger Hendler of York; seven grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; one niece; and several cousins. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in South Hills Hebrew Cemetery, York. Rabbi Irwin Goldenberg will officiate. Shiva services will be observed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Sanger, 538 Maywood Road, York on Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403.
