Memorial services for John W. Ruettinger, 81, a civic leader, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, in the Winnetka Congregational Church. Mr. Ruettinger died Feb. 26 in Evanston Hospital after a long illness. He lived in Winnetka.
Mr. Ruettinger was born in Chicago. He graduated from Lake View High School and then from the University of Illinois with a degree in architectural engineering in 1927.
From 1927 to 1933 he was an engineer and estimator for John Griffiths & Son Co., Chicago builders. His father, John C., was employed by the Griffiths firm as chief engineer and builder, and supervised construction of Soldier Field, Union Station, the Merchandise Mart, the 1 N. La Salle Building, and other structures.
Mr. Ruettinger opened his own office at 1 N. LaSalle in 1933, focusing on investment management for himself and his family. He recently moved his office to Winnetka.
He was president of the City Club of Chicago from 1952 to 1954, and of Olivet Community Center, now Chicago Commons Association, for 12 years. He was past trustee of the Ravinia Festival Association, a member of the Presidents' Club of the University of Illinois Foundation, and a governing member of the Orchestral Association.
He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago, a founding member of the Paul Harris-711 Club, and a member of the Michigan Shores Club and the Chicago Athletic Association. For many years he actively supported cancer research projects at the U. of I. Medical Center. He also gave funds for scholarships at the U. of I., and at the McCormick, Chicago and Union theological seminaries.
Surviving are his wife, Edith; and three daughters, Carla, Linda, and Barbara McQuillan.
