Maier Mendel (Stengel) Fuchs1,2

#1444, b. 16 February 1838, d. 9 August 1911
Last Edited=5 Feb 2017
Maier Mendel (Stengel) Fuchs was born on 16 February 1838 at Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany.3 He was the son of Lehmann Fuchs and Caroline Stengel. As Maier Mendle's parents were not married no father is listed on his birth record. When Maier was seven years old, his mother, Caroline, married Lehmann Fuchs. In Lehmann and Caroline's marriage contract, Lehmann agreed to adopt Caroline's son, Maier. From that time Maier used the surname Fuchs. It is interesting to note that the marriage contract states: "daß ihr Kind sofern bekannt ist, keinen Vater mehr habe" [that her child, as far as it is known, does not have a father anymore] and that therefore there are no obstacles to the adoption. This statement would indicate that Maier's father died prior to 1845. Maier Mendle's name lends a clue as to who his father may have been, although there is no way to prove this. Both of Caroline's grandfathers died prior to Maier's birth, so it would have been most likely for her first son to be named after one of them, either Löb or Joseph. Instead Caroline gave her son the name Maier Mendle. In Weingarten there was a Maier Mendle, a shoe maker apprentice from Fischach, Bavaria, who died on 19 August 1837. As this was only six months before the birth of Maier (Stengel) Fuchs it is very likely that this is the individual after whom Maier Mendle (Stengel) Fuchs was named. The fact that Maier Fuchs's father was no longer alive in 1845 also points to that Maier Mendle may have been his father, although after the passage of 170 years, there will likely be no way to prove this.3,4,5 Maier Mendel (Stengel) Fuchs married Hannchen Prager, daughter of Samuel Prager and Dina Wolf, on 4 December 1862 at Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany.6 Maier Mendel (Stengel) Fuchs married Helena Hanna Prager, daughter of Samuel Prager and Dina Wolf, on 11 November 1878.1,7 Maier Mendel (Stengel) Fuchs was Handelsmann.1,2 He witnessed the marriage of an unknown person on 6 December 1894 at Crumstadt, Groß-Gerau, Hessen, Germany.8 He died on 9 August 1911 at Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany, at age 73.9,10 He was buried on 11 August 1911 at Weingarten Jewish Cemetery, Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany, Grave No. 9.10
