Emilia Del Giudice1

#2906, b. 11 October 1862, d. 22 February 1943
Last Edited=17 Sep 2017
Emilia Calzaretta née Del Giudice
Her married name was Calzaretta. Emilia Del Giudice was born on 11 October 1862 at Oliveto Citra, Salerno, Campania, Italy.2 She was baptized on 11 October 1862 at Church of S. Maria della Misericordia, Oliveto Citra, Salerno, Campania, Italy.3 She was the daughter of Macario (?) and Filomena Del Giudice.4 Another source suggests that Emilia Del Giudice was born on 16 October 1863 at Naples, Italy.5,6,7 Emilia Del Giudice was also known as Calzareth.8 She married Gaetano Calzaretta, son of Felice Maria Antonio Calzaretta and Teresina Cantalupo, A search of the marriage records for the parish of Oliveto Citra was conducted to locate a marriage record of Gaetano Calzaretta and Emilia Del Giudice however no record was found. All evidence found thus far points to Gaetano and Emilia never having been formally married. The baptismal records for their children (Floristano, Attilio, Addolorata, Emira, Teresa and Maria) only list their mother, Emilia Del Giudice, and indicate that the father was unknown. Similarly, Attilio's civil birth record shows that he was illegitimate. Emilia appears to have herself been an illegitimate child, while Gaetano was from a family of landowners. This difference in status of the two families may be why they never formally married.9 Emilia Del Giudice immigrated on 10 July 1905 to New York, New York, from Naples, Italy aboard the Montserrat, having departed on 23 June 1905.10 She and Flory Calzaretta appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 448 West 42nd Street, New York, New York; According to the 1910 census she was 46 years old. She was a widow and had 5 living children but had given birth to ten. She was born in Italy, as were her parents. She immigrated to the country in 1905 but was not naturalized. She spoke Italian and was able to read but not to write.8 Emilia Del Giudice lived circa September 1942 at 11 4th Street, Elmont, Nassau, New York.11 She died on 22 February 1943 at 275 West 238th Street, Bronx, New York, at age 80.4 She was buried on 25 February 1943 at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, New York, in Section 35, Range 4, Plot R, Grave 13, with her husband, Gaetano, and daughter, Emily. No gravestone exists.4

  11. [S54] Cyrus Mitchell and Jeanette (Calzaretta) Grieco seem to have gotten married in 1942 or 1943. Cyrus Mitchell's World War II Draft Regisration Card (filled out on 25 April 1942) lists "Mrs. Jeanette Grieco" as the person who would always know his address. When Jeanette's mother, Emilia Calzaretta, died on 22 February 1943, the informant for the death certificate was her daughter, who identifies herself as Jeanette Mitchell. Therefore the marriage most likely took place sometime between those dates. Subsequent research indicates however that Jeanette's first husband, Salvatore Grieco, did not die until March 15, 1944. Therefore it appears that Jeanette and Salvatore had separated and that Jeanette was presenting herself to some as Cyrus's wife for several years prior to their 1946 marriage.
