Rose Barkin with her daughter, Ida, and son, Abe, c. 1910
Abraham Barkin was born on 16 December 1902 at The Lying-In Hospital, 307 2nd Ave., New York, New York.1 He was the son of Isaac Fein and Rose Schindler. Abraham Barkin appeared on the census of 1 June 1905 in the household of Jacob Lester Unger and Rose Schindler at 20 13th Street South, New York, New York.2 Abraham Barkin and Ida Fein were withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 26 January 1910 by their mother Rose Fein because she was able to maintain them.3 Abraham Barkin and Rose Schindler appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 121 Allen Street, New York, New York; The census states that Sam and Rose had been married for nine years, making one therefore assume that Ida and Abe were his children. Interestingly, the couple was not actually married until 02 June 1912. Either the census information may have been given by a neighbor or Rose or Sam intentionally lied about their marital status.4 Abraham Barkin and Ida Fein were admitted at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 9 June 1911 by their mother, Rose. The following remarks were included:

"Husband of applicant abandonded 1904 - Died in Boston, no insurance; 2nd husband Sam Barkin deserted children 3 mos. ago - whereabouts unknown; brick layer - $15 per week children were formerly "inmates" - no relatives, friend - Mrs. Blankenstein, 55 Clinton Street."5 Abraham Barkin was withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 18 April 1913 by his mother, Rose Barkin, who had remarried.6 He appeared on the census of 1 June 1915 in the household of Sam Barkin and Rose Schindler at 68 Willet Street, New York, New York.7 Abraham Barkin and Ida Fein lived before 3 June 1915 at 68 Willet Street, 1st floor rear (2 rooms), New York, New York.8 Abraham Barkin and Ida Fein were admitted at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 3 June 1915 by their mother, Rose Barkin. The following remarks were included:

"Mother remarried 4 years ago. Her husband deserted her on 2 occasions since her marriage; about one month ago, he deserted again. She does not know where the man is. Woman is tbc [has Tuberculosis] & is going to the Hospital. No assistance from ULDC (?). Both children are exinmates of the HOA."8

Abraham Barkin was withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 4 June 1916 by his mother, Rose Barkin, who had remarried and was able to maintain him.9 He appeared on the census of 1 January 1920 at 104 Allen Street, New York, New York; The 1920 Census information for the Barkin family appears to be largely incorrect. Ida Barkin, Rose's daughter, also appears listed with the family although she had married James H. Michaels six months prior to the 1920 Census. She is also recorded with her new husband. Rose's age is listed as 29, when in fact it should be about 36 - 40. Abe is listed as being 10 years old, when he is in fact 18. There is a sister-in-law included in the household, Bertha (perhaps Beckie), who if it is Beckie Schindler, is included with her husband in Brooklyn as well.10 He appeared on the census of 1930 at 206 Broome Street, New York, New York; Rose Barkin paid $13 dollars a month in rent. According to the census, she was 40 years old, widowed, and able to read and write. She as well as both her parents were born in Russia and her mother tongue was Yiddish.11 Abraham Barkin's age is given as 18 on the census, although he was actually 28 years-old.11 He lived on 7 July 1934 at 478 W158th Street, New York, New York.12 He was a clerk.12 He married Jeanette Melnick on 7 July 1934 at Municipal Building, Manhattan, New York, New York.12 Abraham Barkin married Jeanette Melnick on 24 July 1934 at 319 E Houston Street, New York, New York.13 Abraham Barkin died in August 1967 at New York, New York, at age 64.14
