Irwin D. Wolf Jr., former Kaufmann's Department Store executive and owner of a chain of specialty china and crystal shops, died of a heart attack yesterday in his Downtown apartment.

Mr. Wolf, 73, of the Gateway Towers was the grandson of Edgar Kaufmann, founder of the department store chain, and the son of the late president and general manager of the business, Irwin D. Wolf Sr.

Mr. Wolf was divisional merchandise manager for Kaufmann's for 20 years. In 1961, he purchased the Reizenstein chain of specialty china and crystal shops and continued to operate a mail order business under the Reizenstein name after closing the retail outlets.

He was also the owner of 12 area franchises of a retail chain called A Shop Called East.

A graduate of Lehigh University, Mr. Wolf was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as a lieutenant commander.

He was a former member of the board of directors of the United Jewish Federation.

Mr. Wolf was also one of the outstanding male needlepoint artists in the district.

Surviving are his wife, Florence C.; two daughters, Dana Egert of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Kathy Arnheim of Point Breeze; two sons, Irwin D. ''Casey" III of Hillsdale, N.J., and Andrew D. of Library; a sister, Betty Loeb of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, John M. Sr. of Shadyside; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call two hours before the funeral at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Burial will be in West View Cemetery, Ross.
