Ernest J. Moore died peacefully after a short illness, on Nov. 18, 2005, at his home in Palo Alto. He was 86 years old.
A memorial service begins at 4 p.m. Monday at the Palo Alto Unitarian Church, 505 E. Charleston Road in Palo Alto, with a reception to follow.
Born in Germany, he spent a happy childhood and early adolescence there until his family fled the Hitler regime in 1934. He subsequently lived in Belgium and England, where he earned his bachelor's degree at the University of London. He and his family then emigrated to San Francisco in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence as one of the "Richie Boys" during World War II and participated in the landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. After his return, he received his doctorate degree in electrical engineering at UC Berkeley, at that time only the 10th successful candidate for this degree in that department.
He moved to Palo Alto in 1950 where he worked for SRI International in Menlo Park for 34 years, ending his career there as vice president. He then became the president of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology for several years, retiring at age 70. He served on the institute's board of trustees until his death. He was a member of the Palo Alto Unitarian Church for more than 50 years, and served as president of its board of trustees for two terms.
His family described him as a man with many interests, including skiing until age 83, hiking, the study of French and a wide range of literature, especially history. He was known in his neighborhood for his walks with his dachshund, Emma.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ursula Moore; his three daughters, Barbara Ellis and her husband Jim of Danville; Ginni Davis and her husband Mark of Davis; and Jacqueline Moore and her husband Steven Dantzker of Berkeley; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Eric, Alicia, Ben, Jacqueline, Jeffrey, Nick, Scott and Lizzy; three daughters by choice, Kathy Jessen of Oakland; Carolyn Couls of San Rafael; Clarkie Conant of Menlo Park and her son, Nathan; and one son, by choice, Richard Andrews of Santa Cruz; his sister, Ruth Schrag of San Francisco; and his late brother Frank's wife, Cecile Moore of Tucson, Ariz.
He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Ernest J. Moore Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, for ITP graduate students, at 1069 East Meadow Circle, Palo Alto, CA 94303.
