BRIDGEWATER -- Else Fuerst, 96, died Friday (March 10, 2006) at Central NJ Jewish Home for the Aged in Somerset.

Else was born in 1909 in Rexingen, Germany, at the edge of the Black Forest. She was educated privately and lived in Pforzheim, Germany, before emigrating the the U.S. in 1983. She resided in Queens, N.Y., where she did sewing contracting for a menswear manufacturer.

In 1940, she married Ernest Fuerst, a partner in the Sunrise Milling Company in Somerville. During their marriage, they traveled widely and were a member of Twins Brooks Country Club. She moved to Bedminster in 2001 to live with her son. A tireless volunteer for area charities, the Jewish Community Center in Bridgewater and her synagogue, Temple Sholom of Bridgewater. Else was a homemaker and noted cook, baker and knitter. When the weather was warm, she took a mile-long walk every day. She also enjoyed the Dillon Library in Bedminster.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Martin Wolf, who died in 1935; and her husband, Ernest Fuerst, who died in 1970.

She is survived by her two sons, Steven Fuerst and his wife, Elizabeth, and Bert Wolf and his wife, Rita; three granddaughters, Diane Wolf, Dr. Susan Greens and Emma Fuerst; and a great-grandson, Mark Greene.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. today at Temple Sholom, Bridgewater. Interment will follow in Temple Sholom Cemetery, Bridgewater, under the direction of Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville.
