CECIL YGNACIO CASTRO--Castro: Cecil Ygnacio, 94 years old, a descendent of the first Spanish settlers of California, passed away August 21, in Santa Clara after a brief illness.

Mr. Castro was the great-great-great-grandson of Cayetano Espinosa, a Spanish soldier who came to California with Fr. Junipero Serra's mission party. His maternal great-great grandfather, Salvador Espinosa, had land grants in the Salinas Valley between Greenfield and King City and in the Castroville-Santa Rita area including Rancho Bolsa de Escorpines. His father, Andronico Castro, was a descendent from Rafael Castro, a Spanish general. The king of Spain rewarded Gen. Castro for his loyalty with a land grant, the Rancho Aptos, extending from Soquel to near Watsonville.

Mr. Castro was born in Castroville in 1903. After graduating 75 years ago from Monterey High School, he began work in San Francisco in the Automotive trade. He moved to San Jose in 1925 working for numerous automotive repair shops of his own. "Cece" was well known in the auto trade and became a founding member of the Automotive Mechanics Union Local chapter #1101 of the I.A.M.

After his retirement, his hobby was grafting and growing fruit trees. He was married to Maebelle Holy Castro for 22 years until her death. Later he re-married Alice Rush Castro. They lived in Santa Clara for 40 years until her death in 1955.

He is survived by his brother, Albert P. Castro, 98, of Vallejo, and his two sons, David R. and Carl J. Castro and his Step-Daughter, Carol Castro Misner. He has 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday August 26, 1997 at 12:00 p.m. at the Mission Chapel of San Jose Rancadore & Alameda Funeral Directors, 600 So. Second St., San Jose, CA 95112. Visitation Monday August 25, 1997 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Interment Mission City Memorial Park, Santa Clara.
