Lore Kauffmann was born in 1907 at Stuttgart, Württemberg, Germany. She was the daughter of Hugo Joseph Kauffmann and Martha Schloss. The following is an excerpt from the book Signs of Life of a letter from Lore Auburn:
"I was born in Stuttgart in 1907 and went to the Olgastift after two years in the Waldorfschule. I went to the Realschule after attending Girls School. Already at that time anti-Semitism was rife. I was the only Jewish girl at the school. Once I ran home, and only after my mother had spoken to the very nice headmaster did I go back.      After Maturum, I studied medicine in different universities: Tübingen, Berlin, Zurich, Heidelberg, where in 1928 I met my future husband, who was a few years ahead with his medicine studies. In 1933 we were both employed by the Neuköliner Hospital in Berlin at the time of the Reichstag fire. As my husband was given notice because he was fremdstämmig, we left for Holland on the last train on March 31 from Berlin overflowing with refugees. We had relatives in Holland, and my husband, after some difficulties, went to England and with the help of a Russian doctor found out that he could qualify for a Scottish degree in a year in Edinburgh. I had only done two months of my practical year as a doctor and therefore, was not admitted. My husband worked for an Indian doctor as underpaid, overworked assistant in Manchester, and then we settled and after some difficulties got permission by the Home Office to start practice in Whitefield, Lancashire. My husband volunteered for the British Army and was actually in the Normandy landings. Also, apart from working as field officer for the evacuation of the wounded, he enjoyed being able to work as interpreter of German prisoners-of-war. I contracted TB while he was overseas, so after the war we decided to emigrate to New Zealand, where my husband established a good medical practice. I had volunteered during the war for service in a hospital and was put on the Permanent English Medical Register. After ten years, my husband took a position as director of student health at the Auckland University and, when he retired, worked medically part-time. I was able to help him with his medical work and also with his interest in old prints, book translating, etc. I have three children. One son is associate professor of law. After spending ten years in Israel, mostly working on a kibbutz, he qualified in New Zealand. The second son, after qualifying as a diesel engineer, also spent time overseas and in Israel. He is now running an antique shop. Both sons were in Israel on active service during the 1967 war. We adopted our daughter, who is now married and has three children and also lives here.
I have never been back to Germany after short visits in 1934 and 1935. I have a few relatives in New York, also in Berkley."1 Lore Kauffmann lived in 1981 at 3 Coronation Road, Epson, Auckland, New Zealand.2

  3. [S54] Rosalia is not listed in the 1793 census and was hence born after that time. She had a sister, born in 1798, who was still unmarried in 1818, at the time Rosalia's son, Aron was born. Her first child was born in 1814, meaning that she was probably born about 1794. It may be as well that she is the "Shile" mentioned in the 1793 census.
