Gaetano Calzaretta

#8048, b. 17 November 1854, d. 13 November 1908
Last Edited=15 Sep 2017
Gaetano Calzaretta, circa 1905
Gaetano Calzaretta was born on 17 November 1854 at Oliveto Citra, Salerno, Campania, Italy.1 Gaetano Calzaretta was also known as Gaetano Cono Emilio Giuseppemaria Calzaretta.2,1 He was the son of Felice Maria Antonio Calzaretta and Teresina Cantalupo.3 Gaetano Calzaretta married Emilia Del Giudice, daughter of Macario (?) and Filomena Del Giudice, A search of the marriage records for the parish of Oliveto Citra was conducted to locate a marriage record of Gaetano Calzaretta and Emilia Del Giudice however no record was found. All evidence found thus far points to Gaetano and Emilia never having been formally married. The baptismal records for their children (Floristano, Attilio, Addolorata, Emira, Teresa and Maria) only list their mother, Emilia Del Giudice, and indicate that the father was unknown. Similarly, Attilio's civil birth record shows that he was illegitimate. Emilia appears to have herself been an illegitimate child, while Gaetano was from a family of landowners. This difference in status of the two families may be why they never formally married.4
An unknown person was listed as the head of household on the 1905 New York State Census on 1 June 1905 263 10th Avenue, New York, New York. Also living in the house was.5 Gaetano Calzaretta died on 13 November 1908 at Manhattan, New York, New York, at age 53. He was buried on 15 November 1908 at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York, in Section 35, Range 4, Plot R, Grave 13, with his wife, Emilia, and daughter, Emily. No gravestone exists.6
