Max Fuchs

#3001, b. 15 July 1894, d. 13 July 1941
Last Edited=25 May 2009
Max Fuchs was born on 15 July 1894 at Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany.1 He was the son of Hermann Fuchs and Nanette Blum. Max Fuchs married Hilda Hagenauer, daughter of Benjamin Hagenauer and Mina Fuchs, on 6 June 1919 at Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany. Max Fuchs married Rosa Kirchheimer, daughter of Sigmund Kirchheimer and Pauline Kirchheimer, on 2 May 1924 at Berwangen, Kr. Sinsheim, Baden, Germany.2,3 Max Fuchs operated a business as a cattle dealer and a large slaughterhouse, which he had taken over from his father, Hermann Fuchs, who died shortly before his marriage to Rosa Kirchheimer in 1924. He improved and rounded out the business by replacing and improving the machinery. About five to six heads of cattle were slaughtered daily, with a little bit more on Sundays, because Mondays were the busiest days. A car to transport the meat was always available to him from Bacher Auto Rental in Weingarten so that the meat could be brought to Karlsruhe to be sold. None of the meat was sold in Weingarten.

Max Fuchs's cattle was obtained regularly at markets in Mannheim, Neustadt, Stuttgart and Landau. He was known as such a good purchaser that the farmers in the area, who had cattle to sell, would call him to offer it to him or to sell it to him in another way at the best prices.

In the slaughterhouse Max had two journeymen. Rosa was always helped out by a maid and always worked with Max in the business. She took care of the book keeping and collections. In the first few years of their marriage, Max rented vehicles to transport the meat and the cattle but later purchased his own truck for the cattle, which was always driven by Willy Bacher. Rosa estimated that their income was around at least 1,000 RM. They did very well and never needed for anything.

After 1933 the business admittedly experienced a significant decline, because the boycott against Jews was started, which ultimately led to the closing of the business at the end of 1936. Max's steady customers included the butchers: Hollstein, May, Gartner, Karl Schmidt, Willy Fritscher.

Max Fuchs was arrested in 1936. He had actually been warned beforehand but didn't attach any importance to it because he didn't want to abandon everything. He was imprisoned for about 14 days in Karlsruhe. He and Rosa began the immigration process immediately after his release. They were able to flee to Switzerland first in 1937, because they feared that Max would be arrested again. They were only able to take 40 RM for the whole family. In Switzerland they were picked up by Max's cousin, Max Blum, who also financed their further trip to Argentina, which they planned immediately. They payed him back the full amount of the trip once they were in Argentina. The family traveled in September 1937 aboard the Campana from Genoa to Buenos Aires.3 Max Fuchs emigrated in 1937 to Argentina.4 He died on 13 July 1941 at Buenos Aires, Argentina, at age 46.3
