Ida Fein1,2

Ida Michaels, possibly c. 1931
Ida Fein was born on 31 October 1900 at Mothers' and Babies' Hospital, 596 Lexington Ave, New York, New York.2 She was the daughter of Isaac Fein and Rose Schindler.3 Ida Fein was born in June 1901 at New York, USA. DNA testing results of two of her grandchildren strongly point to her father as having been a member of the Fishman family, originally from Warsaw, Poland. Further testing is needed, but Ida likely was not related to the Fein family. She and her brother, Abe, may have been half-siblings.4 According to Selma Michaels Calzareth, Ida's daughter: Her Mother [Rose Schindler Barkin] did not remember the birth date for her daughter Ida, so October 31, 1900 was always used but it was later suspected that she was born around June 1901. [AC Note: The birth certificate seems to agree with the October 31, 1900 birthdate, meaning that perhaps the story should be the Ida believed she was born in June 1901, but it turns out she was born on October 31, 1900.] She appeared on the census of 1 June 1905 in the household of Jacob Lester Unger and Rose Schindler at 20 13th Street South, New York, New York.5 Ida Fein was also known as Ida Barkin following her mother's relationship with Sam Barkin, which started by 1910 and Barkin was considered her maiden name later in life. She and Abraham Barkin were withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 26 January 1910 by their mother Rose Fein because she was able to maintain them.6 Ida Fein and Rose Schindler appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 121 Allen Street, New York, New York; The census states that Sam and Rose had been married for nine years, making one therefore assume that Ida and Abe were his children. Interestingly, the couple was not actually married until 02 June 1912. Either the census information may have been given by a neighbor or Rose or Sam intentionally lied about their marital status.7 Ida Fein and Abraham Barkin were admitted at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 9 June 1911 by their mother, Rose. The following remarks were included:

"Husband of applicant abandonded 1904 - Died in Boston, no insurance; 2nd husband Sam Barkin deserted children 3 mos. ago - whereabouts unknown; brick layer - $15 per week children were formerly "inmates" - no relatives, friend - Mrs. Blankenstein, 55 Clinton Street."1 She was being treated in the hosptial from March 8th to April 8th, 1912.8 Ida Fein was withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 21 April 1913 by Rose Schindler becauser her mother had remarried and was able to maintain her.9 Ida Barkin appeared on the census of 1 June 1915 in the household of Sam Barkin and Rose Schindler at 68 Willet Street, New York, New York.10 Ida Fein and Abraham Barkin lived before 3 June 1915 at 68 Willet Street, 1st floor rear (2 rooms), New York, New York.3 Ida Fein and Abraham Barkin were admitted at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 3 June 1915 by their mother, Rose Barkin. The following remarks were included:

"Mother remarried 4 years ago. Her husband deserted her on 2 occasions since her marriage; about one month ago, he deserted again. She does not know where the man is. Woman is tbc [has Tuberculosis] & is going to the Hospital. No assistance from ULDC (?). Both children are exinmates of the HOA."3

Ida Fein was withdrawn at Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Amsterdam Avenue, between 136th and 138th Streets, New York, New York, on 20 June 1915 by her mother because she was able to maintain her. Ida was going to live with her grandmother, Alice Schindler at 128 Broome Street.11 She married James Harry Michaels, son of Giovanni Mical and Maria Della Monica, on 8 July 1919 at Municipal Building, Manhattan, New York, New York.12,13 Ida Fein lived on 8 July 1919 at 111 Essex Street, New York, New York.12 As of 8 July 1919,her married name was Mical. As of 8 July 1919,her married name was Michaels. She and James Harry Michaels appeared on the census of 1 January 1920 at 69 E. 99th Street, New York, New York.14 Ida Fein, age (an unknown value), appeared on the census of 1930 in the household of Ida Fein and James Harry Michaels at 1386 East 2nd St, Brooklyn, Kings, New York.15 Ida Fein lived before February 1958 at 63-69 72nd Place, Queens, New York.16 She died on 21 February 1958 at Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, Kings, New York, at age 57 from cancer.16,17,18 She was buried on 23 February 1958 at Beth David Cemetery, 300 Elmont Road, Elmont, Nassau, New York.17

Benjamin Raphael may have been born in Lehrensteinsfeld; received schutz in Binswangen in 1655; aided the German army in Neckarsulm with money during the Thirty's Years War; By 1655 either Benjamin or Abraham occupied their father's house, the other brother built his own house. They all paid an annual fee of 10 gulden to the Binswangen community. By 1668 Benjamin is the only remaining Jew in Binswangen. In 1669 he appealed to be taken by the community in Neckarsulm. Due to his apparently strong financial influence (as a money lender?) he was accepted and moved in 1671 to Neckarsulm. He purchased a house in 1676 from Peter Heilmann. (All from Angerbauer and Frank: "Juedische Gemeinden in Kreis und Stadt Heilbronn.")1 He was born circa 1620.1 He was the son of Raphael (?)1 Benjamin Raphael was born circa 1635.
